Torrox
is a small typically Andalucian town approximately 10 km away from Nerja. 126 m. high and sheltered from the Northern winds by the mountains of Tejeda, Torrox pueblo is still untouched by tourist development. Here you can truly appreciate the Spanish way of life and have unmatched mountain and sea views.

Torrox is an ideal base for exploring this fascinating region with its mountains, national parks, and famous old towns. Local activities include hiking in the local countryside, horseriding in the Sierras or touring the local villages to sample their wines and cuisine.

There are Roman ruins all along the coast and the ruins of the Roman Village at the Torrox Lighthouse are protected as a Property of Cultural Interest.

For a touch of the tourist life you can try Torrox Costa, a resort only some 4 km from Torrox with beautiful beaches, promenade, restaurants, shops, night life etc. It is this combination of old and new which makes Torrox such an interesting place to stay. Here you can have a quiet self catering villa holiday in the Torrox countryside with the convenience of easy access to modern Costa del Sol holiday resort facilities.

We have a large list of properties for sale in Torrox region. TORROX

Torrox
is a sizeable village only 45 km. away from Malaga and some 4km inland from its coastal offshoot and is not without charm. This is the perfect setting to relax and take in the stunning scenery that the Axarquia region of southern Spain has to offer. As well as enjoying the mountains you will be spoilt by the fine sandy beaches of Torrox Costa which boasts a long promenade and many exquisite restaurants.

Historically, Torrox reached the height of its prosperity during the Moorish period due to its pivotal role in the silk trade between Granada and Near Eastern cities such as Baghdad and Damascus. The centre is very pretty with brilliant white-walled houses clinging to the steep slope on which the town is built. There are many winding streets and squares where you can sit and laze the day away drinking locally made wines and dining on local specialities such as migas cortijeras.Still untouched by tourist development you really can appreciate the Spanish way of life and have mountain and sea views not matched anywhere else in this region of Andalucia.

Torrox is steeped in history with roman ruins and thermal baths dating back to the 16th century as well as many historical buildings and monuments such as the Convent and Hermitage of the Virgen de las Nieves (XVI century), the towers of its old walled enclosure which according to some historians may have been the birthplace of Almanzor, the Church of San Roque (XVI c.), the Hospital of San Jose (XVIII c.), as well as the old Mint or the Sugar Factory (XIX c.). The other visit you must make is to see the House of the Moorish Kings, which dates from the 18th century and has the most wonderful gardens. From the gardens you can gain access to the underground mines built by Abomelik in the 14th century. Originally it used to have 365 steps but now you will probably be pleased to know that you only have to negotiate 200. Inside are several rooms used as dungeons and storerooms.

You will never be short of things to do in Torrox. The town has many festivals and feasts throughout the year such as la Candelaria (September 7- 8), the night of San Juan (June the 24), the Cruces de Mayo (May 2-3) and the famous feasts of Las Migas (last Sunday before Christmas).

.If you want a slightly more active time you have plenty of activities to choose like hiking in the local countryside, horseriding in the Sierras or touring the local villages to sample their wines and cuisine. Back on the coast, Torrox Costa is a popular coastal strip, particularly with holidaymakers who flock there during the summer, with a choice of hotels and accommodation available. Torrox Costa is also the site of the remains of a Roman necropolis and villa located immediately west of the lighthouse. There are the usual array of water activities, plenty of shops and restaurants to explore or you can simply stretch out on the sandy beach and have a well deserved siesta in the year round warm climate this area has become famous for (averaging 30 degrees in the summer months).
